In the context of palaeoclimatic events one should discuss the possibility of natural changes of the composition of the atmosphere, effective at a time-scale of 10-100 years, notably the role of greenhouse 26 gases. Most important in this respect are H20 and C02, which are responsible for about 65 and 25 percent of the total greenhouse effect (Dickinson, 1982). While condensation at the sea surface is (in the tropics) a rare event, evaporation increases strongly from upwelling episodes (with cold water, stable stratification and weaker winds) to warm water episodes (with unstable stratification and consequently stronger surface winds).
Henning and Flohn (1980) and others have shown that in typical upwelling episodes evaporation drops to values near lmm/d, in contrast to (normal) values of 4-5mm/d above warm water. Under ENSO conditions water vapour is convectively transported into higher layers and (as a positive feedback mechanism) enhances high convection and rainfall. Following Bacastow (1976), many authors have found a distinct positive correlation between sea surface temperature (SST) in the upwelling regions of the Pacific, and the detrended and deseasonalized course of the C02 content of the atmosphere.
