Innocence breeds happiness, and the children are unaware of the darker nature of things in the outside world. Winter arrives, and with it the cold. But the children can fortify themselves against the cold with the love they show each other, and with the stories that Grandmother tells them.

Rough drafts reveal paragraphs and pages written, scribbled out, re-written, and scribbled out again. At one point he even tried pasting up a collage of different bits—including paragraphs written by other people—and asked for editing assistance from a trusted friend. The act of writing his life story was very challenging for him and took its toll, causing him both psychological and physical stress: Let me tell you that it has not been an easy task to gather everything together in my mind, to compress it onto paper, and to do it in a single effort of writing it down.

Andersen’s Fairy Tales Andersen did not meet with much critical success in writing poetry, plays, or novels. These genres were not a good fit for him—his writing was considered to be superficial, immature, and unoriginal. Critics faulted him for creating heroes who were obvious stand-ins for himself: young geniuses struggling for recognition but finding only rejection. When Andersen turned to writing fairy tales, however, these writing “faults,” some of them stemming from his Asperger’s Syndrome, became assets instead.
